Topcon, a global leader in positioning technology, serves surveyors, civil engineers, construction contractors, and equipment operators. At its North American HQ, a massive interactive wall allows visitors to explore Topcon products within a dynamic, virtual job site. Seeking to bring this experience to a wider audience,

Topcon wanted a  portable, scalable solution for its sales teams—one that could adapt seamlessly to various environments, from bustling job sites to quiet conference rooms.

The challenge was to create an interactive, presenter-friendly experience that was both engaging and intuitive while avoiding unnecessary distractions like excessive animations and transitions. The final product needed to work seamlessly across both tablets and large touch-screen displays, delivering a smooth, impactful experience wherever it was used.

Approach

My team set out to design a tool that was easy to use, not dependent on any specific physical environment and attuned to the needs of a presenter. We wanted to improve the overall experience while simultaneously minimizing pain points of the primary users and meeting the desires of the business stakeholders. Working hand-in-hand with our internal development team helped us to understand and push the boundaries of what was possible for our team to build within the given timeline in a way that maximized innovation and accomplished all of the client's key goals.

Steps

  1. We interviewed stakeholders and users to identify key pain points and prioritize solutions
  2. We designed two options and A/B tested them with sales people
  3. We worked with stakeholders to align the desired option to as many user needs as possible
  4. We designed interactive prototypes to formulate interaction design patterns
  5. We worked with engineers to build a functioning prototype that worked on tablet devices. We tested with sales people in the field.
"I want a simplified navigation that makes sense and is easy to use in any environment. It needs to be flashy while not distracting from the important stuff."
